Dusting Solution Recipe

dusting-solution
Slowly but surely I have worked through all my household products and developed a system of homemade recipes all based around a few simple ingredients. I will be going though each of these in the coming weeks and uploading them here. Today’s Recipe is: Dusting Solution

I have this lovely refillable duster with a washable head on it. It has a small spray bottle built into its handle which makes it very easy to give the area a small spritz before I start to dust. In this recipe I have refrained from adding any essential oils, but plan to add a few drops of lavender to my next batch! Be sure to test an area first to avoid any possible damage to the surface.

INGREDIENTS:
dusting-solution-recipe
½ Tsp Olive Oil
¼ Cup White Vinegar
3 Cups Water
3-5 Drops Essential Oil [Optional]

INSTRUCTIONS
Mix together all ingredients and store in a glass jar in a cool, dark cupboard for six to eight months. Use a small spritz on surfaces. Shake well before use. Enjoy!

Homemade Washing Soda

Great Idea! This came to me tonight from one of the members of my Environmental Health Group! Not only is this  Frugal and easily accomplished... Its just plain hard to buy Washing Soda here in Canada!! I have tried, and its just not a product that is readily available.

I have a few recipes that I had to settle for just plain Baking Soda that I can now try with this new ingredient.

Just make sure that you make it in a well ventilated area... I suggest in a toaster oven outdoors if possible.

Many thanks to Penny from Penniless Parenting!! Great Resource site!

Kelowna Capital News - What we can learn from our dogs

We are NOT alone, there are so many of us out there suffering, too often isolated and feeling pretty alone. I LOVE how this woman turned her story around! I just wish I knew exactly how she did it, and how successful she has been. Maybe its time we all defied gravity and 'Throw the Frog!"!

I am interested in what this means exactly, and how it relates to our Illness.
"As it turns out, learning how to shift out of survival patterns and learning to “throw the frog” are just a part of the essential tools that we use to rewire limbic system function. However, when suffering from a limbic system impairment, this can seem like defying gravity itself and takes great understanding of brain function, immense dedication, persistence and patience."
I am on a Mission now! I would like to know more about how to shift out of these basic survival patterns and rewire this "limbic system" - stay tuned! :D

Home-made Scent-Free Laundry Detergent Recipe

Home-made Scent-Free Laundry Detergent Recipe

I have scouted about a number of websites until I came up with this recipe, and after a few attempts, this is the best I came up with. The recipe below is for ONE GALLON, but I usually make about 5 Gallons at a time and find for the two of us, myself and my fifteen-year-old-son, that I am only having to make it about twice a year!! I am not complaining about that, nor the savings!!

I also use this same recipe for my Dishwasher detergent. When I make up the laundry detergent recipe I top up my container for dishwasher detergent as well before I take the laundry soap downstairs.

Ingredients:

Liquid Soap – You could use Castille Soap, but I actually used some leftover unscented, environmentally-friendly Laundry soap that I had left, and it worked a charm. Imagine if 1 cup of this produces approximately ONE GALLON [16 cups] of Homemade Laundry Detergent how cost effective that is! Cheaper than Castille, although feel free to use that instead.

Borax – Borax [aka sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate] is a NATURALLY OCCURING mineral deposit produced by the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes. It is is not acutely toxic, but it may cause irritation. “Sufficient exposure to borax dust can cause respiratory and skin irritation. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal distress including nausea, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Effects on the vascular system and brain include headaches and lethargy, but are less frequent.” [Wikipedia Information on Borax]

Washing Soda - Make your own Washing Soda.

Home-made Laundry Soap Recipe:

Stir: In a large bowl the following ingredients, stir until dissolved:
  • 2 cups warm Water
  • 1/3 cup Salt
  • 1 cup Baking Soda [or Washing Soda]
TRANSFER: Transfer the contents of the bowl to a One Gallon+ Container and fill almost to the top with warm water.

ADD & Stir:
  • 1 cup Liquid Soap
  • 1 cup Borax [optional]

One Gallon = 32 Loads - ½ Cup per Laundry Load

Unscented Shampoo and Conditioner Recipes

Been meaning to post this for a while now... I now spend LESS THAN $10 PER YEAR on my hair care products!!! One of the blessings that has arisen out of my Environmental Illness is that it forced me to seek out alternatives, and as my income diminished it forced me to seek out ever more frugal options. This is one of my more spectacular finds!!

My hair has never felt better, shiny, bouncy and healthy! I was spending a fortune [that I couldn’t afford] on expensive organic unscented shampoos and conditioners that did nothing at all for my hair. It was lifeless and limp, and often my scalp was itchy and flaky.

I found the following recipes on during a web search and haven’t looked back since!! All you need is two spray bottles or two empty [cleaned] shampoo/conditioner bottles.

Shampoo
1 TBSP Baking Soda
1 Cup Warm Water
Mix well to dissolve.

Conditioner

1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Cup Water
Mix well.

Directions:
1. Wet hair and apply liberal amount of Shampoo. Add a little more water and scrunch hair well, working the mixture down to the scalp. There is no lather.
2. Rinse hair
3. Apply a liberal amount of Conditioner. Again, add a little more water and scrunch mixture through the hair working down to the roots.
4. Rinse hair well. [The smell of vinegar will not linger.]
5. Dry and style hair as usual.

Please note: It can take your hair a few weeks to adjust to this new method of cleaning. Its important to allow it time to adjust to its own natural oils. I noticed results straight away!!
